The MDSA field hockey coach, Mrs. Mary Gentner, isn’t your average coach; she is a mom of four and an attorney as well! She began coaching 10 years ago when she started the recreational field hockey program in Catonsville with some of her colleagues. She has been a coach at MDS for 7 years and 5 years as head coach. She can’t imagine not coaching for any longer.
“The fall is always a crazy time of year but we all love being busy,” said Mrs. Gentner.
Aside from being a coach, Mrs. Gentner is a proud mother of two daughters and two sons. One of her daughters, Blake, 21, is a MDSA graduate and her other daughter Riley, 17, is a current senior at MDSA. Both girls played field hockey and were coached by their mom.
“They [Riley and Blake] call me coach on the field as all the players are my girls,” said Mrs. Gentner.
Not only are there two generations of Gentners on the field hockey field but there are three! Betty Gentner, Mrs. Gentner’s mother-in-law, also helps coach the field hockey team.
Mrs. Gentner explains that her mother-in-law “has coached for years at Seton Keough in lacrosse and basketball and her experience has been invaluable! It is really wonderful to have her with our program! The girls all call her Grammy!”
Mrs. Gentner’s favorite part of coaching is getting to see the girl’s hard work and determination pay off in games. She is looking forward to another winning season for MDSA Varsity field hockey and hopefully another Conference Championship!
