Sailors Become Superheroes For a Night

With movies like The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises premiering over the past few months, it’s no surprise that superheroes are so popular right now! So, what better theme is there for the Mount de Sales fall mixer than a night of superheroes?

Sailors were creative in coming up with costume ideas. Senior Grace Woo decided to go as a lesser known character, Black Bat – Batman’s daughter.  “She’s a really awesome and inspiring character,” said Grace, “I wish more people knew about her!”

But what other female heroes are there? Everyone knows about icons like Wonder Woman and Black Widow, but there are so many more! Some girls, like Grace, dug into comic books, looking for more obscure characters. Others went for the more mainstream ones – stars of cartoons or other TV shows.  Either way, they ran into problems. It’s not easy to procure superhero outfits for girls that are “Mount de Sales appropriate.” Students solved this problem by either making their costumes from scratch or utilizing what they already had in their closets. Grace sewed her costume, while senior Marina Congedo made her outfit (she’s decided to attend as the protagonist from Nickelodeon’s Legend of Korra) by mixing and matching clothes. There are even a few girls that decided to go as male heroes; there were an abundance of Supermans and Batmans.

“I wore my glow-in-the-dark Superman shirt!” said senior Elizabeth Bell.
