New JV coach Rachel Guzman graduated in 2009 and is currently a junior at Stevenson University. She has such a love for the school and for field hockey that she has returned to teach the freshman and sophomores all about the sport!
“Rachel’s great, she’s helped the defense to keep their sticks down in the circle and, she’s taught us how to drive the ball up the sideline where our team can receive it,” said sophomore Madison Diehlmann.
The girl’s improved defense skills really showed on Friday at their first game on the turf field versus Atholton. The defenders, working with the goalie, held the circle and didn’t allow the opposing team to score once! The sailors were quick with their shots and communicated up and down the field, leading them to a quick and easy win 3-0.
“Coach Rachel has helped the offense a lot! She’s taught us how to pass on an angle and how to shoot as soon as we enter the circle,” said freshmen Lizzie Halligan.
After the game Rachel said her favorite thing about coaching is, “sharing my knowledge about field hockey with other girls who share the same love for the sport. It’s fun to teach a group of girls who are really willing to learn as much as I can in a short amount of time.”
